I want to know what drives user retention in swordbattle

When I first started playing swordbattle, I kept playing for the grind. I don’t think I played a .io game with a leaderboard and rankings that show up right next your username in game, like swordbattle does. I wanted to be one of the top 100 players. I also wanted to get some of the most expensive skins in the game lol. I honestly didn’t think I’d get as far as I am now, having reached top 100 on three separate accounts.

With a relatively small community compared to the large, popular .io games, reaching top 100 is definitely doable. It’s even more doable when you consider how many of the players can be really friendly and supportive. That’s another reason why swordbattle was really fun for me. I met so many players in this tightly knit community, and it’s crazy thinking about how many friends I’ve made here.

I now mostly play swordbattle for the PVP. With the experience I’ve gained from playing, I think I’ve gotten pretty decent at PVP. It’s really thrilling fighting against teamers and winning when all odds are stacked against you.

I haven’t played much Swordbattle before, so it’s more of a new experience to me, but I especially like being able to customize my character, both in how they look and how they play out, with the upgrades being one of my favorite aspects of .io games in general. The bosses are very interesting too, it feels rewarding to defeat one while being risky to do so, and the thing I like the most when I play Swordbattle.io is the community itself, everyone is super nice and friendly, wich I wasn’t really expecting, since pretty much all .io games I’ve played had some sort of toxicity in their communities, and it’s very relieving for this to be an exception.

Well, for V1 I mostly played because the game was fun and I made a few friends. Swordbattle also is a fun pvp game so I liked the idea of hitting people with sharp sticks.
V2 is a bit different. Of course, I play the game for fun. But now, I mostly play to fight people and get leaderboard. I especially like it when half the server is chill with me and the other half wants to kill me.

At first I only played because I wanted to beat my friends but then I joined the forum and I had way more fun with the small but nice community gautam made. I am pretty sure I got to like #30 and then stopped to play a dif game called battledudes.io but during this summer I decided I didn’t want to suk at the game anymore so I grinded to top 20. Clearing a server even if it is just for a few minutes is super satisfying lol. I just like the simple but rewarding PvP mechanics ig?

I started playing because I loved .io games. But the reason I kept playing is totally different.

I have only 70 hours total in SB, which is less than other, more dedicated players, but in that span of time, I have made countless friendships, defeated innumerable amounts of enemies, and have even won a 1v13 against my IRL friends, who picked up the game around the same time I did (2021).

Here’s something I said all the way back in May:

If you didn’t read my bio, I was one of the first to play swordbattle. I saw it on a replit kajam in 2021, and the rest is history. Back then, the playerbase consisted of replit devs, like Bruhtyug, amasad, and RayhanADev. One of the best players was probably CosmicWarlord, who we all know and love. The bot’s names were things like India, Pakistan, UAE, Gopal, Ram, etc. The highest you could get was 20k, and if you had above 5k, everyone would target and roach you, because there were no other good ways to get coins. I remember getting two 20k runs, only because I used the godly strat of sitting in the corner and getting everyone’s coins when they came to roach me.

As one of the oldest players, I have been with SB every single step of the way. I was there for the first spring update, where there were Easter eggs as currency (something like that, I don’t know), and the second one, with the pink grass and multitude of evolutions.

Now the time for a third update is approaching. I know Gautam has a lot planned. The main reason I keep playing this game is my contributions. I can make a difference. I can get ideas, post them, and there is a chance that they will ACTUALLY BE ADDED.

That is not the case of almost any other game out there. Want to refine current game mechanics (check below)? You can do that! Want to make a new evolution? Done (check my featured topic) ! Want to come up with something entirely novel? Heck, even I’ve done that!

Biomes (but more fleshed out):

First, we have to have a big map. That is a must.

Right above your XP bar, there will be a new addition to the HUD: The Location Thingy! It will say “Location: ”

Now, onto the content! First, the biome placement. If you were to visualize the four quadrants of a coordinate plane, then those four would be the biomes. The x-axis and y-axis would be the rivers, and the origin would be the Rock of Rebirth (if you were in the Rock, then your screen would read Location: Rock of Rebirth). The Earth Biome (Location: Dense Jungle) would be Quadrant I, the Fire Biome (Location: Arid Desert) would be Quadrant II, the Air Biome (Location: Windswept Pinnacle) would be Quadrant III, and the Ice Biome (Glacial Wastes) would be Quadrant IV. These are placed like this because the opposing Element shouldn’t be touching (ex: Fire and Ice are not touching, Earth and Air and not touching).

Obviously, the Rivers would be thicker and the Rock would be bigger than their coordinate plane counterparts. Now, to be clear, the Rock would not have any rivers running through it. It would also be a LOT bigger than a big rock. The four rivers would completely surround the little Rock of Rebirth, and the whole point of the Rock is so that players don’t get spawn killed, as once you exit the Rock, you cannot go back in. Also, coins don’t spawn there.

Onto the rivers! They will have more rocks than regular land. Also, if we are to implement powerups, I personally think there should be a very, very rare powerup named “God of the Sea” that gives you 3x regen, 3x health, and 1.5x size when in a river, but if not in a river, you will not regen health and you take 1.25x more damage. Onto the Lush Jungle!

The Lush Jungle will have a lot more bushes and trees (bushes but with trunks), as well as a regular amount of rocks (their sprite is covered in moss). There will also be snakes that stay in one place (they are poisonous and they stop your regen if you step on them). In the middle, there is the Clearing (Location: Grassy Clearing). Substantially more coins and chests spawn here, as well as less bushes. It’s not too big, but the length will be around 3 purple chests side by side.

The Arid Desert is mostly… desertlike. It has a decent amount of rocks, and very little bushes. The climate is quite dry, so after 3 minutes of not going to a river, your screen will blur from heat exhaustion. The only exception to this dry place is the Oasis (Location: Lush Oasis) in the middle of the desert. It’s the Clearing, but in the Desert with more bushes and a different sprite.

The Windswept Pinnacle is kinda like a mountain. It will have a lot of rocks and less than usual bushes. It also will have pitfalls that slow you. And for the thing in the middle, the Meadow (Location: Mountainous Meadow) is literally like the Oasis/Clearing, except for regular amounts of bushes and rocks.

The Glacial Waste is the fourth and final biome. It will have snow-covered bushes and rocks (the regular amount). It has patches of ice that make you slide even after you have stopped moving. At the center, there is a frozen lake (Location: Frozen Lake). It is the Ice equivalent of the Meadow/Oasis/Clearing, but it doesn’t have any rocks or bushes.

Idea: Sword Variation (needs some work):

Broadsword (current sword): Is the same as the basic sword.

Dagger: Thrown sword does 50% more damage than broadsword. Throwing cooldown reduced to 2.5 seconds. Walk speed increased by 20% compared to broadsword. Sword swing does 40% less damage. 60% the size of the broadsword.

Greatsword: Does 200% of the broadsword damage. Hit Cooldown is now 1.5 seconds. Cannot throw your sword. Has 160% the size of the broadsword.

Wakizashi: If you hold down the attack button, your sword will get a blue outline, starting a block. If someone hits you from the front when you are blocking, your wakizashi will store the damage instead of you taking it and deliver 155% of the regular damage. Regular hits with the wakizashi, however, only deal 70% of the regular damage.

Sabre: Has 115% the range of the broadsword. Thinner hitbox. Deals 70% of the broadsword’s damage. Hit cooldown decreased by 50%. Has a 125% longer throw range. Lets the user move 25% faster than the broadsword. User takes 25% more damage.

Flamberge: Cooldown of special abilities are decreased by 25%. Duration of special abilities are increased by 50%. Hit cooldown is increased by 70%.

Like I said, it needs some work. I tried to limit myself to commonly known European swords, so I’m sorry I snuck in the wakizashi. It was the best defensive sword I knew.

Sense in avoiding ela right now so I’m checking fourm and I am very active right now what drives me is a goal to have set such as getting 1 mil and no other games that I am grinding so then I just repedtly do the same thing over and over and over and over again till it works!

Future, the chance of you getting an actually good gameplay mechanics answer is very low. It’s the same as why I played erth.io for years, I just took an interest in it, with the community as well because of the chat feature.
