Description
I would like to propose adding a compass feature in WorldGuessr. The compass would help players understand direction more precisely during gameplay, showing cardinal directions (N, S, E, W) and allowing better orientation in the environment.
Problem
Currently, players often struggle to determine the exact direction they are facing, especially in locations without clear visual clues like sun position, road signs, or landscape orientation. This can make it harder to analyze routes, road angles, and regional geography. It also limits the ability to deduce which hemisphere a player is in based on sun movement and shadow direction.
Proposed Solution
Add an optional compass in the UI that can be toggled in settings.
The compass should:
-
Show cardinal directions (N, S, E, W)
-
Rotate dynamically based on player view direction
-
Optionally display degree values (0–360°) for more advanced players
It could be implemented as:
-
A small HUD element in a corner of the screen
-
A toggle in settings (on/off)
-
Possibly a “hard mode” option where the compass is disabled for extra challenge
Example / Mockup (optional)
Similar to compass systems in games like GeoGuessr-style mods or open-world games such as Minecraft or The Forest, where direction is always visible and updates in real time.
Benefits
-
Helps players estimate road direction and route alignment more accurately
-
Makes it easier to determine hemisphere using sun position and shadow angles
-
Improves learning value of the game by reinforcing geographic orientation skills
-
Adds a useful tool for more competitive or advanced players
-
Reduces guesswork in direction-based reasoning
Possible Downsides
-
May slightly reduce difficulty for experienced players
-
Could make the game easier in competitive modes if not balanced properly
-
Might be considered too informative for “pure guessing” gameplay styles
