The answer is 78.
Sure, you can argue your only getting 12 presents, 1 each day. Or you could argue your receiving 364 presents getting the previous gifts everyday until Christmas. But the real answer is 78. It’s simple. 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12 = 78. The song recounts each item as a list, adding a present every stanza. Two turtle doves = 2, not 1. There’s specifically 2 of them! I’m not sure how you mess up enough to get 42. (Glad no one put that as their answer…)
